Robin,
Thanks so much! Two grandsons!! You guys aren't old enough! And you certainly don't look old enough!
As for me, I am working on a second novel that I think will be a young adult novel and I continue to teach at the University of Tampa. The good news there is that most of the time now I am teaching either creative writing or fiction writing rather than freshman expository writing (Thank the Lord!!). I have come to Virginia a few times on whirlwind visits but am planning to come for a more leisurely visit in the spring. Would LOVE to get together. Also, I am trying to talk Leslie into coming to Florida in February for a girls weekend in the sun. Could you come? Get away from the cold for a couple of days? See the beach. Watch my daughter Emma (now in 10th grade) ride and jump her way too big and very green new horse? Please consider it. I think we could have lots of fun hanging out!
Ellie is in her second year of college and loves it. She is attending New College, which is Florida's honors college, and finally feels she fits in. Leo is in the honors college at the University of South Florida and has been accepted into the International Honors Society of International Business and Marketing. He's due to graduate at the end of summer 2012.
That's all my news. Will be in touch about February.
Love to you and Michael,
Charrie

Hi Sam,

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. (I am not a very good blogger as it turns out, but I am going to try to reform!)

I LOVED your father and mother! And I have several of your dad's paintings hanging in my house. One large one of a fisherman on a lake over my mantel, and one I absolutely adore of our cottages on the ocean in Rockport, MA. He drew and gave as a gift to my parents a picture of their house on the Potomac River (viewed from the river), with my Dad's sailboat in the foreground, that my parents used as the heading on their personal stationary. I made of their stationary for the cover of a book of my mother's poetry that I published for family and friends after my mom died in 2007. Check it out on Amazon.

Do you ever get to Florida? I live in Safety Harbor (across the bay from Tampa) and would love for you to come by for a visit and see the paintings I have by your father and to swap stories.
Please let me know.
Sincerely,
Charrie

Congratulatioons,Charrie, on your new award.
I have often thought of Falling since reading it two years ago and seeing you here in VA.
Every time I do, I wonder when you'll be back in VA, and whether you are working on a new novel.
It seems nuts that it has been two years already!!
Mike and I are grandparents twice now. Two grandsons, Sam and Alex.
Our sons are both flourishing and that makes life so good. Meanwhile, Michael's Mom moved in with us two Februarys ago. Her Alzheimers is getting rather advanced and she cannot be left alone. So that's our challenge. Thank goodness we love her so!
I hope you are well, your kids are thriving, and you have been inspired to write novel # two.
Love and best wishes from

Charrie, I never met you, but I feel somehow connected with your family though my transcriptions this summer of my father's, Leo Hershifleld's, daily diaries from 1923 to the day he died in 1979. He was a illustrator/cartoonist for the Changing Times from its inception was valued your dad as a great friend. I'm reliving 1962 this weekend and it's July 28th and Dad has just had a wonderful sail with Jack and friends on the "Lark" from Hallowing Pt. to the Md. Shore where they played slot machines, had highballs, ate smorgsboard and sang all the way home by moonlight arriving back at your parent's dock at 3 a.m. When I read about the 19 foot sloop you grew up with, I wondered if it were the same magic boat that carried them almost 50 years ago. Sam Hershfield, Bradenton, Fl and Hendersonville, NC.
